How to Make Your Home Safe From Storms
By Justin L. Cook

The recent super storm that affected a large portion of the country has made us realize that we are really unprepared to deal with calamities such as those. The amount of damage that it has created definitely seems to drive in that point. While there are cases where storm damage was inevitable, there are some that are actually preventable.

There are some types of damage caused by storms which cannot be prevented, but to help you out in making your home more secure, here are some tips. These tips can be useful in making your place more safe in the event of a storm:

1. You should strengthen the roof of your house. Gabled roofs are more likely to suffer some form of damage than other types, so you should try to have it reinforced. You can try to add some braces for the trusses that serves to hold up the roof.

2. Windows and glass doors are particularly vulnerable when you have very strong storms. There is an easy way of making them storm-proof however, and that is by adding storm shutters to them. You can buy ready-made shutters but you can also make it if you want and if are able to.

3. Most bolts installed on doors are not designed to withstand the force of winds generated by a very strong storm. You have to find ways that you can reinforce that. The best solution to this problem is to install additional bolts.

4. Garage doors are another weak point in homes. That can be reinforced with the use of horizontal beams on each panel.

5. Authorities recommend that families living in areas where hurricanes and tornadoes are a common occurrence to construct a safe room. A safe room is part of the house that is sound enough structurally to withstand the force brought about by extremely strong winds.

6. Part of making your home safe during a storm is to prepare your yard safe as well. There are a couple of things that you can do to achieve that.

7. Don't park your vehicle under a tree. The winds might be strong enough to uproot the tree and crash on the vehicle. That could even be more serious if you are inside the vehicle during at the height of the storm.

8. Remove any ornament outside the home and in your yard that is not secure or those that could get blown away by winds. They might end up being dangerous projectiles that could hurt people and do some additional damage.

9. Storms can mean flooding in some areas as well as erosion and landslide. If you live in areas where that is a possibility, you should look into the chances that you might have to evacuate even before the storm hits and seeing to it that you can get updates on the latest development.

10. If there is a likelihood that you might have to evacuate, then better do it while the storm has not struck yet. It would be far more difficult to move around when the storm is raging already.
